One of the most important nutrients that we need in our daily diets is fibre or also known as roughage. Dietary fibre refers to the indigestible part of plant food which consists mainly of cellulose. Fibres can be found most commonly in green vegetables, fruits, nuts and wholemeal grains. Why is fibre an important part in our diets? Here are a few reasons why:
- Aids in defecation and prevents constipation (it is not absorbed by and assimilated into the body)
- Provides bulk to the intestinal contents because of its high water holding capacity
- Aids in peristalsis (contraction of muscles along the walls of the alimentary canal when u consume food)
- Reduces the chances of cancer
- Neutralizes blood-sugar level
- Lowers cholesterol level
