Dark Circles

Dark circles under the eyes tell us about the health of an individual. They are produced due to overstrain, after an illness or an allergy. They can also be the result of undernourishment. But these dark circles do not produce any harm to the body. So anybody with dark circles should not worry about them. In fact, sometimes they're not even an indication of physical problems. Dark circles can be aggravated by fatigue, allergies, overexposure to the sun, menstruation or pregnancy. But they're usually hereditary; if your parents have them, there are more chances that you do, too have them.
Dark circles are the result of the engorged blood vessels under your eyes. Because the skin under eyes is thinner than skin anywhere else on body, therefore blood vessels there are more noticeable, especially in fair skinned persons. Usually, dark circles are caused by hyper pigmentation of melanin, the substance that gives color to the skin.
In western countries, the kidneys are related to the adrenal glands and with stress levels in life being so high; these glands are very often exhausted. When these glands are weakened, allergies are prevalent.. Dark circles under the eyes are known to be a classic symptom of an allergy, together other signs including edema and fatigue.

Apply a cold compress this will help to constrict blood vessels and turns tissue white, and dark circles will lighten. Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water everyday. Put slices of raw potatoes or cucumber by closing eyes over the eyelids for 15-20 minutes. Wash with warm water and apply a cream. Take out the juice of the cucumber. Prepare a mixture of lemon juice, lanolin cream and cucumber juice and apply around the eye for 10-15 minutes. Prepare a mixture by adding equal quantity of potato and cucumber juices. Dip a cotton swab in this mixture and put the cotton on eyelids and keep for 20 minutes. Wash your eyes with cold water. Prepare a mixture of lemon and tomato juice (equal parts) and apply it on the black circles 2 times a day. Make a paste of turmeric powder with pineapple juice for dark circles under the eyes..
dry skin and winter itch
Keep skin moisturized. Probably the most important thing you can do to prevent and treat dry skin is to moisturize daily with a cream-based moisturizer, advises Sheryl Clark, M.D., a dermatologist at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City. "An oil-free moisturizer is recommended for those who tend to break out. Also, those with sensitive skin should choose a moisturizer without perfumes or lanolin." The brands most highly recommended by experts include Eucerin, Complex 15, Moisturel, Aquaphor and Aquaderm-all available over the counter.
But don't get soaked. You don't need expensive skin creams to keep skin moisturized. "Nothing beats plain petroleum jelly or mineral oil as a moisturizer, " says Howard Donsky, M.D., associate professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and author of Beauty Is Skin Deep. In fact, he acids that virtually any vegetable oil or hydrogenated cooking oil--from Crisco oil to sunflower or peanut oil--can be used to relieve dry skin. But note: They do feet greasier than commercial moisturizers.
Don't be too hyper about your hygiene. "Bathe in cool to tepid water as briefly as possible and no more than once a day," according to Michael Ramsey, M.D., clinical instructor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. "Cleansing lotions are more gentle than soaps, and they're just as effective at removing dirt," adds Leonard Swinyer, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. And don't use a washcloth--just your fingertips. If you must use soaps, stick with mild brands such as Dove, Aveeno or Basis.
Add some oil to your bath. Make the most of your tub time by adding a bath oil rich in moisturizers- -even when you apply creams after bathing.
Again, there's no need for the fancy stuff: Plain ol' castor oil is an excellent, low-cost choice. "It's one of the few oils that will disperse in water, and it won't leave a ring around the tub," says Varro E. Tyler, Ph.D., professor of pharmacognosy at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and author of The Honest Herbal.
Make your own bath oil by mixing 1/2 cup of castor oil with ten drops of sandlewood-, pine-, rosemary- or mint-scented oil and storing it in a closed jar. Add one teaspoon of the mixture each time you bathe. For those who prefer store-bought brands, Alpha Keri body oil, Geri-Bath and Nutraderm bath oil are highly recommended.
Caution: Be careful in the bathroom, because these oils can make tubs and floors extremely slippery.
Dry yourself damp. After bathing, pat your skin almost dry-never totally dry with a towel. While the skin is still damp, apply your moisturizing lotion. "It's more effective to apply moisturizer to damp skin immediately after bathing than to put it on totally dry skin, because the moisturizer is what holds the water in," says Kenneth H. Neldner, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock. "A couple of pats with a towel will make you as dry as you want to be before you apply the lotion. You're trying to trap a little water in the skin, and that's the fundamental rule in fighting off dryness." If you have dry hands, he advises keeping some moisturizer near each sink in the house and using it as needed.

MEMORY PROBLEM

Choline is used by our brains to make the important chemical acetylcholine, which is required for memory. At a health food or vitamin store, buy choline chloride or choline hydrochloride not choline bitartrate. (The latter sometimes causes diarrhea.) Taking choline may improve your memory and your ability to learn. You should also notice a keener sense of mental organization. Dose: Take 500 mg of choline twice a day. (Set your alarm clock so you won't forget to take it.)
Here's a memory-improving drink-combine half a glass of carrot juice with half a glass of milk, and drink daily.
Three prunes a day supposedly improves memory. It can also help prevent constipation, and since constipation paralyzes the thinking process, take three prunes a day.
Daily doses of fresh ginger used in cooking and for tea may heighten memory.
Add four cloves to a cup of sage tea. Sage and cloves have been said to strengthen memory. Drink a cup every day.

Try This Paraguay Punch
Yerba mate (pronounced mah-tay) is a form of holly and is the national beverage of Paraguay, where it's grown. One of the many positive effects of the herb, according to South American medical authorities, is that it strengthens one's memory. Drink one cup early in the day. Yerba mate is available at health food stores.

HIGH BLOOD CHOLESTROL

Cholesterol, a yellowish fatty substance, is one of the essential ingredients of the body. Although it is essential to life, it has a bad reputation, being a major villain in heart disease. Every person with high blood cholesterol is regarded as a potential candidate for heart attack or a stroke. Most of the cholesterol found in the body is produced in the liver. However, about twenty to thirty per cent generally comes from the food we eat. Cholesterol is measured in milligrams per 100 millimetres of blood. The normal level of cholesterol varies between 150 - 200 mg per 100 ml. In blood, cholesterol occurs in combination with certain lipids (fats), hence, known as lipoptroteins. There are two main types of lipoproteins: a low density one (LDL) and a high density one (HDL). The low density lipoprotein is the one which is considered harmful and is associated with cholesterol deposits in blood vessels. The higher the ratio of LDL to the total cholesterol, the greater will be the risk of arterial damage and heart disease. HDL, on the other hand, plays a salutory role by helping remove cholesterol from circulation and thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. High Blood Cholesterol SymptomsHigh Blood Cholesterol CausesHereditaryHypercholesterolaemia or increase in cholesterol is mainly a hereditary disorder. Excessive consumption of rich foodsIt is also caused by taking rich foods and fried foods: excessive consumption of milk and its products like ghee, butter, and cream; white flour, sugar, cakes, pastries, biscuits, cheese, and ice cream; and non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish, and eggs. Smoking, Drinking and StressOther causes of increase in cholesterol are irregularity in habits, smoking and drinking alcohol. Stress has also been found to be a major cause of increased level of cholesterol.
Eye Stye

A stye is typically harmless. It is an eyes infection. It is a infection of a bacteria and forming at the base of an eyelash, or on or inside the eyelid. The bacteria which are involved are usually Staphylococcus aureus. These bacteria also cause impetigo. Therefore if the patient is ill by impetigo, then chances of eye sty is very high. In the medical science a sty is known as hordeolum. This disease does not affect the vision. Sometimes tiny pimples are developing in the eye. Styes are very common. So persons of all ages can develop a sty, and males and females are equally affected. This condition is seen more often in children than in adults.
There are two types of sties:
external (on the outside of the eyelid) and
Internal (on the underside of the eyelid).
external (on the outside of the eyelid) and
Internal (on the underside of the eyelid).
Causes: Styes are seen as small bumps on the eyelids. Styes are usually harmless and will go away after several days on their own as your body fights the infection. A stye is caused by an infection in the sebaceous or sweat glands in the eyelid. This infection is usually caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. Styes are usually burst on their own and then heal within a few days. In order to prevent spreading or further infection, it is crucial that a stye be left to rupture on its own.
Symptoms:The common symptoms of styes are-
Redness on the eyes
slight pain and tenderness on the eyes
Swelling of a certain area of eyes
Tearing of the eye
Discomfort when blinking
Sensitivity to light
Eye may feel gritty
Burning in the eye
Mucous discharge in the eye The symptoms of a stye may resemble other conditions or medical problems. Always consult your child's physician for a diagnosis. TreatmentDrug therapy can be prescribed by your health care provider. Do not use any medicine without checking with your health care provider. Mostly, drug which we have to use are an antibiotic eye drops/ointment and, occasionally, an antibiotic taken by mouth. Carefully follow the directions prescribed by your health care provider. Home remedies are also good for eye styes. So bathing the eye for 10 minutes several times a day. And use cotton wool soaked in warm water, may help the stye to come to a head, and the pus to discharge. Do not try to squeeze a stye, as it usually drains by itself. The best way to prevent eyes sties is simply to wash your hands regularly and avoiding touching your eyes. It's especially important for children, who may rub their eyes when tired or under stress. Contact lenses should not be worn during infection or drainage of a stye. Your eye care provider may recommend replacing your contact lenses after the stye has healed to prevent recurrence or spread of the infection.

Use special precautions when preparing and cooking food
Wash your hands, clean and disinfect kitchen surfaces before, during and after handling cooking, and serving food.Wash raw fruits and vegetables before eating them. Thaw food on a plate either in the refrigerator or in a microwave, but not on the counter.Cook food immediately after thawing.Use different dishes and utensils for raw foods than you use for cooked foods.
Cool and promptly store leftovers after food has been servedBecause harmful bacteria grow at room temperature, keep hot food hot (140 degrees) and cold food cold (40 degrees or cooler). This is especially important during picnics and buffets.Do not leave perishable foods out for more than two hours.Promptly refrigerate leftovers in shallow containers. If you have any doubts, throw it out.
Grilling Safety...
Cook food thoroughly -- Meat and poultry cooked on the grill often brown quickly on the outside. Use a stem thermometer that reads 0-220 degrees F to be sure food has reached a safe internal temperature.
Whole poultry should reach 180 degrees F
Chicken breasts should reach 170 degrees F
Hamburgers made of any ground meat or poultry should reach 160 degrees F
Beef, veal and lamb steaks, roasts and chops can be cooked to 145 degrees F
All cuts of pork should reach 160 degrees F
NEVER partially grill meat or poultry and finish cooking it later. Cook food completely to destroy harmful bacteria.
Keep hot foods hot - After cooking meat and poultry on the grill, at home or at a picnic, keep it hot until it's served. Keep it hot by setting it to the side of the grill rack, not directly over the coals where they could become overcooked.
Keep cold food cold - When having a picnic, don't open the cooler lid any more than necessary. This lets cold air out and warm air in. Pack beverages in one cooler and perishables in another cooler or container. When handling raw meat, remove from the cooler only the amount that will fit on the grill. Use an insulated cooler filled one-third with ice or ice packs to keep the food at 40 degrees.
Wash your hands - Always wash hands after handling raw meat. If you cook in an area where water and soap are not available, you should use moist disinfectant towels.
Serving the food - Never put your cooked meat on the same platter that held the raw meat. Any bacteria present in the raw meat juices could contaminate the safely cooked meat or other grilled foods. During hot weather food should never sit out for more than ONE HOUR.
Storing leftovers - Once the food has been removed from the grill, it should be refrigerated within two hours. Discard food that has been sitting out more than one hour after it was removed from the grill. Avoid using picnic leftovers since the temperatures at the picnic are questionable.
Marinate foods in the refrigerator - never on the counter top. Do not reuse marinade unless it has been boiled.

Food safety is just as important in your home. Please follow these food safety tips:
Use caution when you buy food
When shopping, buy perishable foods last (such as meat, eggs, milk)
Avoid raw or unpasturized milk
Because eggs, meat, seafood and poultry are most likely to contain bacteria, do not allow their juices to drip on other food
Shop for groceries when you can take food home right away so that it does not spoil in a hot car

FOOD SAFETY
In any given two-week period, 85% of all Americans will eat at least one meal outside the home. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), foodborne illness causes 76 million sicknesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths each year.
Our Environmental Health professionals inspect about 2,000 food service establishments for a 15-county area through a contract with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. In 1999, this area experienced 26 foodborne illness events, which involved 333 people. Depending upon the amount and type of food preparation within a facility, Environmental Health conducts one to three inspections per year for every food operation within our 15-county area
